The perception of flesh tone is a subject mixing Art and Science. It goes from the explanation of colour and flesh tone notions to the analysis of the human mechanisms permitting their perception. This study is divided in four parts. The first one presents colour optical, physical and physiological properties. The second one highlights the relative nature of colour, explaining the role of the brain and the influences of the environment in colour perception. The third part focuses on the structure of the skin and flesh tone properties. It also introduces the fourth part explaining the subjective aspect of human perception.
